"I have been making this compost since 2004 and I have not stopped. I will continue to make compost while I can and while I am alive." - Nezira Fisekovic, compost enthusiast
72-year-old Nezira lives near one of Bosnia’s most polluted towns
Location: Gornja Tuzla
She uses compost to replenish the earth
The European Union has given the town 80 compost bins
to encourage other residents to do the same
(SOUNDBITE) (Bosnian) LOCAL COMMUNITY LEADER AND ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIVIST, MAIDA MEHMEDOVIC, SAYING:
"Composting, first of all, means protecting the environment in which we live, because if we inherit something, we should leave it to those who come after us. We also need to teach children how to protect all of this, and composting is part of that. In addition to protecting the air and water, composting is part of soil protection. Instead of using artificial fertilisers, we use something that is organic."
