Will Community Movie Feature a LeVar Burton Cameo? Troy’s ‘Celebrity Companion’ Mulls Pirate Cliffhanger
We already know that Donald Glover is on board for the Community movie — but what about Troy Barnes’ childhood hero, LeVar Burton?
As Community fans will recall, Burton and his “non-celebrity companion” set sail aboard the Childish Tycoon at the conclusion of Glover’s farewell episode. Then, in the Season 5 finale, a news chyron informed audiences that the pair had been captured by pirates off the Gulf of Mexico — a cliffhanger that went unresolved in the series’ sixth (and ultimately final) season on the now-defunct streaming service, Yahoo! Screen.

Burton, who is currently promoting Trivial Pursuit (airing Thursdays at 9/8c on The CW), recently stopped by TVLine’s New York City offices for an interview with editor-in-chief Kim Roots, who pressed him on his potential involvement in Community: The Movie. When asked if fans should anticipate a cameo, the game show host went silent, save for three words: “Ask Dan Harmon.”
As for whether he has any thoughts regarding the veracity of that news report at the end of Season 5, the Star Trek alum replied, “I don’t doubt it. That was the last we heard from them. They’re on the Childish, as are the pirates, so… we may need an update.”
More than two years have passed since Peacock gave the green light to Community: The Movie, but rest assured: the #SaveGreendale committee will reconvene at some point in the not-so-distant future. Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs, Danny Pudi, Yvette Nicole Brown, Alison Brie, Jim Rash, Ken Jeong and Glover are all on board for the feature-length follow-up.
In a February 2024 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Glover let slip that the movie is set at — what else? — a Greendale Community College reunion. “[Harmon] told me what he wanted, and I was like, ‘This sounds great.’ It’s a college reunion, but Abed is like this big director now, and basically this is his magnum opus,” Glover shared. “I’m like, ‘This sounds f—king tight.'”
Harmon is writing the film with former series scribe Andrew Guest (whose credits include fan-favorite episodes “Advanced Dungeons & Dragons” and “A Fistful of Paintballs”). They’ll executive-produce alongside McHale, Russ Krasnoff and Gary Foster.
We will have more from our Q&A with Burton later this week. In the meantime, hit the comments and tell us if you’re hoping to see the Reading Rainbow and Star Trek legend return alongside Glover in Community: The Movie.
