Communications minister launches 5G Rahmah Package, Civil Servant Rahmah Postpaid Package
PUTRAJAYA, Aug 29 — Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil today launched the 5G Rahmah Package and the Civil Servant Rahmah Postpaid Package as one of the unity government’s initiatives to bridge the digital divide and ensure quality internet is available to everyone at affordable prices.
The Lembah Pantai MP said his ministry, together with Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and telecommunication service providers (telcos), will offer the 5G Rahmah Package from August 31 to December 31, 2023 and the Civil Servant Rahmah Postpaid Package from September 16 to December 31, 2023.
“In line with the importance of the internet as an enabler in people’s daily lives, the Rahmah Internet Package Initiative continues with 5G Rahmah Package and Civil Servant Rahmah Postpaid Package.
“These incentives were realised in collaboration five telcos namely CelcomDigi, Maxis, U Mobile, TM (Unifi Mobile) and YTL Communications (Yes) as well as phone manufacturing companies Samsung Malaysia Electronics and Honor Malaysia,” he said during the launch.
The 5G Rahmah Package is a 5G device bundle data plan priced at RM60 a month with a 24-month subscription contract, with the choice of either a Samsung A14 5G or Honor 90 Lite 5G at prices as low as RM240.
The package provides a minimum data of 60GB and is open to all Malaysians.
Fahmi however said he had outlined the basic specifications for the 5G Rahmah Package and that telcos are strongly encouraged to provide a better package based on their respective sales strategies.
“For example, telcos can offer a smartphone that costs less than RM240 or a monthly postpaid plan that is lower than RM60 or a data quota of more than 60GB per month. I understand that some telcos will offer a 5G Rahmah Package for as low as RM35 for 100GB data and 5G devices,” he said.
The first 100,000 subscribers from the B40 group will be able to enjoy the package with the smart phone priced as low as RM120.
“For example, for a smartphone priced at RM240, an eligible customer needs only to pay RM120 for that smartphone, and in case the telco provides a smartphone at a price that is lower than RM240, like RM200, the price which the customer needs to pay after deducting the subsidy is RM80 only,” he said.
He stressed that only the B40 group are eligible for the 5G Rahmah Package.
Registration for the package can be made in person at the telco sales centre or online through the official websites of the telcos involved.
Meanwhile, the Civil Servant Rahmah Postpaid Package, which was introduced as a token of appreciation to federal and state government servants as well as local authorities, will allow the group to enjoy a monthly rebate of RM10 for their respective postpaid mobile packages which means a savings of RM120 annually.
The incentive is divided into two categories.
The first are civil servants who sign up to subscribe to a postpaid package worth RM60 and above with any telco involved.
The second are civil servants who are currently subscribing to any postpaid package worth RM60 and above with any involved telcos and such postpaid packages are not tied to the contract. If the postpaid package is still within the contract period, they are advised to consult the telcos involved to determine their eligibility for the incentive.
“I want to make it clear here that the incentive does not apply to civil servants who subscribe to any postpaid package in groups through their ministry, department, agency, club, or association (enterprise package) because the package has had rebates or discounts.
“The incentive will be offered from September 16 to December 31 this year, subject to conditions and mechanisms of registration of each telco. More information can be obtained from telcos’ websites involved or present to any branch telcos are involved,” said Fahmi.
