Colts coach Frank Reich tests positive for COVID-19, will miss start of training camp

The Indianapolis Colts will begin training camp without head coach Frank Reich.

Reich announced Monday that he had tested positive for COVID-19. Reich said he was fully vaccinated and was asymptomatic, though no timetable was placed on when he would be medically cleared to coach.

The Colts' first official training camp practice is on Wednesday. The team is preparing for the 2021 season with new quarterback Carson Wentz. Indianapolis traded for the former Philadelphia Eagles QB this offseason.

The Colts traded a 2021 third-round pick and a conditional 2022 second-round pick for Wentz following the retirement of Philip Rivers. The Colts lost to the Buffalo Bills in the first round of the playoffs in January.

Coaches must be vaccinated

All NFL coaches must be vaccinated against COVID-19 if they want to work directly with players during the 2021 season. On Friday, reports emerged that Minnesota Vikings’ offensive line coach and run game coordinator Rick Dennison would not continue with the team after he refused to get vaccinated.

Some breakthrough cases of COVID-19 in vaccinated individuals have been happening across the country as the Delta variant of COVID-19 spreads throughout the United States and the world. It’s important to remember that breakthrough cases are rare and most vaccinated individuals who test positive for COVID-19 are either asymptomatic or experience mild symptoms.

Unvaccinated players in the NFL are going to be subject to stringent protocols in 2021. Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Bruce Arians said that unvaccinated players who violate COVID-19 protocols will be fined $14,000 for each violation.
