“GMA” just hit a five-week high in TV ratings, thanks in very large part to its much-talked-about Colton Underwood interview.
Last Wednesday, the former star of “The Bachelor” came out as gay in an interview in a heavily promoted interview with Robin Roberts, helping lift the show to its highest weekly viewership since March.
“GMA” won the week in total viewers but not in the key news demo of adults 25-54 — but it was close. “Good Morning America’s” key competitor, NBC’s “Today,” won the main demo by a tenth of a ratings point.
All told, for the Week of April 12, “Good Morning America” averaged a 0.7 rating among adults 25-54, a 0.4 rating among adults 18-49, and 3.289 million total viewers. On the day of the Underwood interview, the show pulled 3.092 million total viewers and a 0.6 rating among adults 25-54.
The “Today” show averaged a 0.8 in 25-54, a 0.5 in 18-49, and 3.167 million total viewers.
“CBS This Morning” averaged a 0.5 among people 25-54, a 0.3 in 18-49, and 574,000 overall viewers.
Underwood, who starred on the 23rd season of the ABC dating show in 2019, told Roberts that he decided to come out as gay earlier this year after having thoughts of self-harm. “For me, I’ve run from myself for a long time. I’ve hated myself for a long time,” he said. “I’m gay and I came to terms with that earlier this year and have been processing it. The next step in all of this was sort of letting people know.”
