Colombian students mark Earth Day planting trees

STORY: Since its foundation more than 30 years ago, the Gimnasio Especializado del Norte high school has focused on preparing students to become "guardians of life."

"We have been working hard to raise awareness for environmental care," said Yolanda Rincon, the school's headmaster.

"These children go home and replicate what they are learning at school," she added.

"Even the smallest change helps the environment and since this is a global problem, we are helping by doing our share," said Tomas Lafaurie, a student at the school.

Earth Day, celebrated on April 22 each year, is a way to remind people of the urgent need to intensify actions to protect wildlife and the planet against the destruction caused by human activities.
