Colombia seizes drug runners' homemade sub

Colombian authorities put on display a homemade submarine used by drug runners, which was captured by its navy.

The semi-submersible sea vessel was carrying approximately two tons of cocaine chlorohydrate.

Hernando Enrique Mattos Dager is commander of the navy's counter narcotics task force:

"According to intelligence reports, this shipment was on its way to cartels in Mexico. The value of the shipment would be approximately $60 million dollars in international markets."

Three suspects, a Colombian, an Ecuadorean and a Mexican national were detained during the operation some 35 miles off Colombia's coast, which happened on Monday.

Colombia is one of the world's top producers of cocaine, largely consumed by customers in the U.S. and Europe.

Production is a major source of income to armed groups and fuels Colombia's five-decade-long internal conflict, which has killed more than 260,000 people.
