Colleen Klein, wife of former Alberta premier Ralph Klein, has died. She was 83 years old.

The couple's daughter, Teresa Klein, posted the news to social media on Tuesday afternoon.

"Today we said goodbye and will now celebrate the 83 years of life [of] my mother Colleen Klein," read the post.

"She passed away peacefully in the early morning after months of failing health."

In a later statement on behalf of the family, Teresa Klein said her mother would be deeply missed.

"Colleen's presence in our lives was a source of endless love and warmth. Her compassionate spirit and dedication to helping others were hallmarks of her character.

"Though she is no longer with us, Colleen's essence will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew her, leaving behind a legacy of love and cherished memories."

Colleen Klein, who was born in Victoria, B.C., was a champion of many charitable causes, and received an honourary doctor of laws degree from the U of C in 2002.

She married Ralph Klein in 1972.

In a statement posted to the social media platform X, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith expressed her condolences.

"Colleen's unwavering support and dedication to her family and community left an indelible mark on Alberta."

Gary Mar, who held several portfolios during the Klein administration, including education and health, said he was deeply saddened to hear of Colleen Klein's passing.

"She was a remarkable individual who was a great partner and a real contributor to the success of Premier Ralph Klein.

"She was by herself an estimable individual who cared deeply about children and about Albertans."

Mar added that the Kleins were fiercely devoted to each other.
