KUALA LUMPUR, April 30 — Cloud seeding operations over Penang’s water catchment areas, which were to have started, have been postponed to early May.

CEO of the Penang Water Supply Corporation K. Pathmanathan said the decision was to ensure maximum rainfall to fill the two dams on the island in Teluk Bahang and Air Itam.

“The primary rationale behind this move is to maximise the potential of heavy rainfall by carrying out cloud seeding operations only when the weather conditions are optimal (when large rain clouds are forecasted to be present at the right elevations),” he said in a statement today.

He said water levels at Air Itam Dam and Teluk Bahang Dam are now at 44.8 per cent and 48.6 per cent respectively. The cloud seeding operations were supposed to start yesterday and continue to May 7 based on earlier advice from the Meteorological Department.
