Climate Protesters Confront Senator Joe Manchin in Washington

Climate protesters surrounded US Democratic Senator Joe Manchin at a waterfront garage in Washington on November 4.

This footage, filmed by John Paul Mejia, shows demonstrators chanting “we want to live!” as Manchin walks towards a garage. A silver Maserati drives towards the garage exit, which is being blocked by activists. The car then reverses back into the garage.

An event page for the protest, organised by a climate activist group, takes aim at Manchin, saying “if Senator Joe Manchin wasn’t bankrolled by fossil fuel companies, the reconciliation package would be passed and signed into law—so we’re bringing our fire and fight to his doorstep”.

Manchin refused to back a spending package that would include billions of dollars in climate and energy investment. In a statement, the senator cited economic concerns as his reason for not supporting the bill, adding that he would not “support a bill that is this consequential without thoroughly understanding the impact it will have on our national debt”.
