Climate Activists Block Road During Manhattan Protest

Protesters rallying support for climate-change legislation blocked traffic during a demonstration in Manhattan on Wednesday, June 2.

The demonstration was hosted by the New York City-Democratic Socialists of America (NYC-DSA) Ecosocialist Working Group in support of the New York State Build Public Renewables Act, according to event organizers. The act would require “the New York power authority to provide only renewable energy and power to customers.”

Revolutions Per Minute, a NYC-DSA radio show, posted this footage on Twitter that shows people sitting in the road as police officers stand by and a loudspeaker announcement orders protesters to exit the roadway. The show also posted footage showing demonstrators chanting, “If we don’t get it, shut it down.”
