City approves development application for 2nd Costco in Regina
The dream of a second Costco in Regina just got a little closer to reality.
A development application filed with the City of Regina has been under review by the City of Regina's planning department since the end of July. An update filed by the planning department indicates that application was approved by the department on Aug. 21.
According to documents filed with the City of Regina, the new store would be located in the west end of Regina, next to the Westerra neighbourhood at 8701 Dewdney Ave. That means Regina city council will not be required to weigh in on the application.
The proposed store will be more than 14,800 square metres and will feature a gas station. The store will also include 1,284 parking stalls as well as 16 accessible parking stalls.
Documents filed with the City of Regina show that 620 comments were submitted as part of the public feedback solicited on the new Costco.
Nineteen people were opposed to the store based on concerns including potential traffic impacts, an inappropriate location and the need for smaller-scale retail. An additional 35 people said they'd approve the project if certain features — such as fuel station offerings, traffic impact — were different.
An overwhelming 566 people (91 per cent of responses) were in favour of the proposed store.
There is no timeline for when the Costco will be built.
