Church Damaged After Suspected Tornado Hits Texas Town of Bowie

Severe storms and a suspected tornado hit Montague County in northern Texas on May 22, with substantial damage reported in the town of Bowie, roughly 95 miles northwest of Dallas, according to local reports.

The National Weather Service issued multiple tornado warnings for the area and said severe thunderstorms and two-inch hail were reported across the county.

Chuck Lysaker, pastor at the First Free Will Baptist Church of Bowie, shared video showing damage to the church’s roof as well as uprooted trees and damaged power lines. In the video, Lysaker says the church’s bus was also flipped on its side by the severe weather.

“There’s a lot of damage on the roof of the church here. Many things gone wrong, but we just praise God that we’re safe. We’ve got a long road ahead,” Lysaker said.

Severe weather was also reported in Burkburnett, about 55 miles northwest of Bowie, where residents shared photos showing baseball-size hailstones that hit the area. Credit: Chuck Lysaker via Storyful
