Christopher Reeve's son says dad is the 'definitive' Superman ahead of cameo in James Gunn reboot

Christopher Reeve's son says dad is the 'definitive' Superman ahead of cameo in James Gunn reboot

The journalist, who has a small role in 2025's "Superman," says he's like Clark Kent but with "better eyesight."

As the new documentary Super/Man makes clear, Christopher Reeve left behind a rich legacy not just in the form of the four Superman movies he starred in but also his three children: Matthew Exton Reeve, Alexandra Reeve Givens, and Will Reeve.

Will is especially living up to his dad’s big-screen image. He has a cameo role in next year’s Superman movie reboot, though he warns Entertainment Weekly not to expect too much from his appearance in the James Gunn-directed film.

“We’ve got to pump the brakes on my involvement,” Will tells EW. “I have no insight into the plot, and I have no idea what the movie is about other than Superman. Christopher Reeve is the definitive Superman. But to have this film and the relaunch of Superman coincide with one another is kismet. We didn’t necessarily calculate that; it just worked out conveniently.”

But Will's biggest similarity with Superman might be his offscreen profession as a journalist for ABC News rather than his upcoming movie appearance. In that way, he's a lot like Daily Planet reporter Clark Kent..."but I have better eyesight," Will jokes.

"But as a journalist, I appreciate a well-told, meaningful story that has an impact in the world," Will says, adding of the doc, "This movie certainly does."

Will, Matthew, and Alexandra all provided on-camera interviews for Super/Man in addition to archival footage and connecting directors Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui with people who knew their father (such as the family of Reeve’s best friend, Robin Williams). Talking with EW, Bonhôte and Ettedgui vividly remember their first in-person meeting with the three Reeve children after previously corresponding over Zoom.

“We went out for lunch together, and when Ian and I came out, we both had exactly the same feeling that we had met three parts of Christopher,” Ettedgui says. “We'd met, in Matthew, the reflective, poetic, artistic soul. He is a screenwriter, and creates special effects for films, and has a real seriousness of purpose that was very Chris. Then you've got Alexandra, who's like the advocacy side of Chris. She works as an activist for tech and democracy in Washington, D.C., and she's a real powerhouse. The other two really look up to her, it’s so sweet. In fact, they all look up to each other. And you've got Will who is like the performer. He’s a journalist, but also a natural in front of a camera. The first time we met him for breakfast in London, it felt like meeting Superman.”

Will, for his part, is just satisfied that Super/Man is finally showing the world the insider’s view of his remarkable family.

“The response overall has been gratifying and fulfilling and meaningful on multiple levels," he says. "It's a treat as the son of Christopher and Dana Reeve, just from a child's perspective, it is meaningful to have people love my parents and to get the opportunity to talk about my parents with the world. I'm so proud to be their son. I'm so proud to be a part of this family.”
