Christopher Meloni Is Reviving Elliot Stabler for a New Series
Your mid-quarantine binge of Law & Order: SVU is not going unrewarded. Deadline reports that Christopher Meloni will reprise his role as the beloved Elliot Stabler in a new crime drama series from Dick Wolf. NBC has ordered 13 episodes of the series, which will focus on the NYPD organized crime unit led by Stabler.
Meloni starred in his Emmy-nominated role for 12 seasons opposite Mariska Hargitay as Stabler's partner Olivia Benson. He exited the series after season 12, with his character written off as retiring from the police force. Since 2011, Hargitay has led Law & Order: SVU solo while Meloni went on to roles in Man of Steel, Happy!, and The Handmaid's Tale.
Like SVU, the new series will take place in New York, which opens the doors for the Benson-Stabler reunion of our dreams. Since Meloni departed the series, he and Hargitay have remained close; in January, they appeared in a TV special, The Paley Center Salutes Law & Order: SVU, on NBC. That's when Deadline first reported "chatter" of a new Wolf-Meloni series. Meloni also shared a photo with his former co-star on Instagram in September 2019.

Things have clearly changed for Meloni, who tweeted in 2018 that he had "no plans" to return, to the world of SVU. The untitled series is executive produced by Wolf, Arthur W. Forney and Peter Jankowski for Wolf Entertainment and Universal TV. Deadline reports that Matt Olmstead (Chicago P.D) is rumored for writer and showrunner of the project.
