Christmas in a caravan after La Palma eruptions

This family is celebrating Christmas in a caravan this year

Location: La Palma, Spain

after the volcanic eruption on La Palma forced them from their home

(SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) VOLCANO EVACUEE, DACIL BATISTA, SAYING: "It really means a lot when you have children, regardless of whether you feel down. At this time of year you must be strong for the children because they are excited about Christmas."

Batista has been living in the caravan with her partner

their two children and pets

(SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) VOLCANO EVACUEE, DACIL BATISTA, SAYING: "I have a snake and of course I wasn't going to leave it behind and here it is. I know I will be told it's not the best place for it, but it's not for us either, and I have tried to keep her here in the best possible way. She eats and does everything. The only thing is that it is not in its terrarium like it was at home."

The Cumbre Vieja volcano began erupting on Sept. 19

It has since forced the evacuation of thousands of residents

destroyed about 3,000 buildings and devastated crops

(SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) VOLCANO EVACUEE ADAM GONZALEZ, SAYING: "I practically spent 7, 8 days without sleeping, sitting outside the caravan looking as if we could extend our hand and stop it, so it wouldn't damage anything. By the 7th or 8th day I realized that no matter how much I looked at it, it would do what it wanted. After that I would sleep in the caravan with the window open, also looking at it for hours, but in the end we got used to it. The strange thing now is to go to bed and not hear it. What's hard now is opening the door and thinking that if nothing is happening why are we still here? It's been three months and now it's difficult not see it or hear it. To know it happened but as if nothing ever happened."

Gonzalez and Batista hope they'll be able to return to their home soon

(SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) VOLCANO EVACUEE ADAM GONZALEZ, SAYING: "Sincerely I am handling it really well. A lot of people are much worse off that we are. We still have the house. You have seen it. We have the house. Many people don't, that is why we are better off than many people. We aren't at home but it's like we were. It's a smaller space, but we are here."
