Christian Siriano wants to give everyone “a fabulous red carpet moment.”

The fashion designer, 38, recently published his third book with Rizzoli, Christian Siriano: The New Red Carpet. The book features the stories behind and photographs of Siriano's most eye-catching red carpet moments.

“We’re celebrating beauty from everyone — you know, age, gender, all walks of life — and I felt like that’s very different than a lot of designers,” Siriano told PEOPLE at a celebration for the book in N.Y.C. on Oct. 10. “That was my idea here—to celebrate all these people in one book [and] to showcase how one designer can make all these different types of people look great.”

One of the CFDA designer's favorite parts of the book is the stories about fittings.

"It’s a beautiful visual book, but I think [that's] really fun to read — who wanted to wear this, or if they didn’t like something," he says. "I tell it like it is in the book and try to give people a behind-the-scenes approach that you won’t always get. Not every designer or brand is as open as I am, which can be good, and bad."

The red carpet has changed in many ways, Siriano says, noting that he opens the book with Alexa Chung and Alex Newell, who are “totally different" from one another. For future red carpets, he wants “people to not judge everyone so much for their red carpet looks — we want it to be fun.”

“When I was a little boy, I loved watching the red carpet because I love seeing the fantasy,” he says. “But when people are so tough on everybody, the fantasy kind of dies a little.”

Newell, Laverne Cox and Rosie Perez were among the stars featured in Siriano’s book who appeared at the celebration. Among the other celebrities included in the book are Taylor Swift, Jennifer Lopez and Kim Kardashian.

Siriano says he has developed friendships with many “great icons that I’m so honored to make clothes for.”

“I think the clothes are the best when you know the person a little bit more,” he says. “That’s a lot of the reason why a lot of people that are in my book chose to wear me, it’s a more personal thing.”

This kinship with celebrities has not come without some friendly disagreements, Siriano says.

“Me and Alicia Silverstone, I think we fight over every outfit,” he jokes. “But then she always trusts me, and it always looks good.”

Siriano notes that when it comes to fashion mishaps behind the scenes, he has experienced “everything” — including being robbed.

“They took such strange things," he says, adding. "But, they didn’t take any of the clothes, so that was good."
