Christian Siriano has achieved a lot since he skyrocketed to fashion fame as the winner of Project Runway way back in 2008. He’s dressed everyone from J-Lo to Michelle Obama. He has his own talk show on Bravo. He’s even secured a spot on Time’s list of the most influential people.

Siriano is now branching out into interior design with the launch of his first-ever furniture collection, available today on 1stdibs. And unlike his showstopping red-carpet numbers (who could forget Billy Porter’s 2019 Oscar gown?), this nine-piece line is surprisingly restrained, rooted in simple geometric forms and neutral materials. “I think because my dresses are so bold and bright, this was a palate cleanser,” Siriano tells ELLE Decor.

The furnishings grew out of a small interior design practice Siriano launched in January. “We started with three pieces,” he explains. “We did them in the pandemic as fun, and then people wanted them and we started selling them and the retailers kept buying.”

Those first pieces include the sculptural Lula chair, a piece supported by just a pyramidal timber column and a single leg, and the Lola settee, which is anchored by four triangular timber feet. Both feature minimal round back cushions, upholstered in a nubby cream-colored bouclé.

“Some of them, honestly, emulate people,” Siriano says. “The original Lula chair was supposed to be like a tuxedo dress. We named them after people—some are in my life and others are a fantasy.”

The whimsical Lily stool, meanwhile, was inspired by a gumdrop—Siriano’s favorite childhood candy.

Even though the new collection marks a creative shift for him, Siriano’s tailoring sensibilities are still near and dear. He points out that the Lily stool has just a single seam. And plenty of research and experimentation went into the fabrics, too. “This doesn’t pill,” he says about the performance bouclé. “I have a dog, and she runs ragged on everything.”

The collection not only builds on Siriano’s interiors business (expect more residences and a hotel soon) but also allows him to engage with his fashion customers in a whole new way. “There’s amazing furniture out there but I think there’s something to be said about people buying a dress in my brand and now they want furniture,” he reflects. “It’s like getting a piece of the brand too.”

One major difference between fashion and furniture, according to the designer? “Well, no returns!”
