Chris Pine Says It 'Would Be Ridiculous to Try to Bring Me Back' Again for a “Wonder Woman 3”

The actor said he originally had "no interest" in playing his 'Wonder Woman' character because it "sounded like second fiddle"

Chris Pine thinks he's done with the Wonder Woman franchise.

The actor played Steve Trevor in the 2017 original alongside Gal Gadot as the superhero, and though he died at the end, his character was resurrected in the 2020 sequel Wonder Woman 1984.

Pine told Business Insider it would be "ridiculous" to enlist him and his character again for another installment.

"Me? No. Homie is dead. Steve is gonzo. It would be ridiculous to try to bring me back," he said.

He originally passed on the role before meeting with director Patty Jenkins, Pine added. "I had no interest in playing the boyfriend, and it sounded like second fiddle. Then, in talking to Patty, the way she described it was, 'Forget the superhero of it all, this is a romance, this is Casablanca. That's the movie I want to make,' " recalled Pine.

"I was like, oh, now that is very cool because when have you seen a superhero film that was a love story, ultimately? That had nothing to do with blowing s--- up," he said.

The actor, who makes his directorial debut with the new film Poolman, also weighed in on the uncertainty of the Wonder Woman franchise's future as DC Studios reshapes its future slate of movies.

"I'm stunned that they said no to a billion-dollar franchise and decided to pivot elsewhere," Pine said to Business Insider. "I don't know what the reasoning was behind that. It's above my pay grade, but Wonder Woman is an incredible character. Patty is such a thoughtful director."

Back in December 2022, multiple outlets reported that a Wonder Woman 3 script by Jenkins was rejected, putting the project's future in question. James Gunn, the filmmaker who became co-CEO of DC Studios, said on social media at the time that "some of it is true, some of it is half-true, some of it is not true, & some of it we haven't decided yet whether it's true or not."

Jenkins then broke her silence on the reports, clarifying that she "never walked away" from the project and she was "open to considering anything asked of me."

She added at the time, "I do not want what has been a beautiful journey with WW to land on [a] negative note. I have loved and been so honored to be the person who got to make these last two Wonder Woman films. She is an incredible character. Living in and around her values makes one a better person every day. I wish her and her legacy an amazing future ahead, with or without me."

Jenkins recently said on the Talking Pictures podcast in March, according to Variety, that she is back to developing a Star Wars film after Wonder Woman 3 "went away."
