KUALA LUMPUR, June 15 — A Chinese actress who came under fire for complaining that 699 yuan (RM451) is not enough to buy a pair of socks has apologised for her comment.

The actress Zhang Yuqi had made the controversial statement during a live stream on Sunday that saw her selling wool products, China Daily reported.

The topic quickly trended on Sina Weibo as platform users took aim at her for flaunting her wealth.

Some social media users condemned her for being arrogant while others pointed out the amount was people’s living expenses for half a month.

Following the roasting, Zhang, who starred in Stephen Chow’s CJ 7 and The Mermaid, apologised for the slip of the tongue that led to the misunderstanding.

She explained that she meant other wool socks are priced higher than what was put on sale during the livestream.

Despite her apologies, the criticism still did not abate.

This was not the first time Zhang had put her foot in the mouth.

She had previously written on her social media not to buy diamonds under one karat.

“Diamonds under one karat are called splints, and splints are worthless,” she shared at that time.
