China's Henan carries out mass COVID testing

Henan reported 56 domestically transmitted infections with confirmed symptoms for Thursday (January 6), down from 64 a day earlier, official data showed on Friday (January 7).

Nearly all of the more than 4 million residents of Xuchang in Henan province were to be tested for COVID-19 on Thursday and Friday and movement of people was to be minimized.

The outbreaks in China remain tiny compared with many overseas, and the highly transmissible Omicron variant has yet to be announced among local infections in Henan, but local governments have maintained high vigilance.

China's policy of blocking any cluster from spreading further has taken on extra urgency in the run-up to the Winter Olympics, to be staged in Beijing and neighboring Hebei province starting February 4, and with the Lunar New Year holiday travel season beginning in less than two weeks.
