‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’ Creator Breaks Down Season 3 Finale’s Time-Paradox Twist

(Warning: This post contains spoilers for the Season 3 finale of “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.”)

Sabrina got what she wanted come the end of the third season of Netflix’s “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” — and so did Sabrina.

OK, if you’ve watched Season 3 through its eighth and final episode — which if you haven’t why are you reading this? — then you know what we’re talking about: Sabrina (Kiernan Shipka) had two copies of herself due to a time loop spell that allowed her to change the events from the previous episode and save her aunties, her coven, Greendale and basically the entire world.

And instead of setting things straight by bringing her two halves back into a whole to put the timeline back on track, the teen witch decided to have her cake and eat it too, by sending one Sabrina to be the Queen of Hell and the other to live her normal life with her family and friends.

Sabrina knew this would not go over well with her cousin Ambrose (Chance Perdomo) should he figure out the potential time-paradox problem she had created. And sure enough, he was pissed, because of course he found out, and of course he pointed out the serious time-paradox problem she most definitely has created.

“Sabrina” showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa broke down this twisty storyline for TheWrap, which was inspired in part by the time-travel laws from the classic Michael J. Fox ’80s flick “Back to the Future,” which even gets a shout-out in the episode.

“I love ‘Back to the Future,’ and to me that’s my kind of time travel or time paradox movie,” Aguirre-Sacasa told us. “I know there is ‘Black Mirror’ and ‘Doctor Who’ and all that stuff. So when we started to play with ideas of time magic, I was like, ‘OK, but we’re never gonna do a time paradox.’ And sure enough, at the end of Episode 8, we went, ‘OK, here we are — we’re literally doing a time paradox.'”

Aguirre-Sacasa told us Ambrose was right to call out Sabrina for what she has done — as it will have “huge repercussions” come Season 4.

“I love the dynamic between Sabrina and Ambrose. And I love that Sabrina is very casual about these huge things that she does and then Ambrose is always like, ‘You have no idea what you’ve done. The implications are gonna be insane,'” Aguirre-Sacasa said. “And I will say that this temporal paradox that Sabrina is kind of casual about will have huge repercussions in Part 4.”

Readers can find the first part of our interview with Aguirre-Sacasa here and check back with TheWrap tomorrow to find out what he can tease about Season 4.
