Fiery protests erupted at a lakeside resort in southern Chile, over a street performer shot dead by a policeman there.

Several public buildings were set ablaze in Panguipulli late Friday, and continued smouldering into Saturday.

Officials and local media reported that protesters burned barricades and threw rocks at a police station.

Police, in turn, fired water cannon and used tear gas to disperse the demonstrators.

The protests were sparked by the killing of a street juggler on Friday.

Graphic video posted on social media shows police shooting at the performer, before another round of gunfire brought him down.

Officials said the officer involved is now in detention, and added that the protests only slowed down the evidence-gathering process.

Theunrest prompted the government to call an emergency meeting on Saturday.

Interior Minister Rodrigo Delgado condemned theacts of arson, but promised justice would be served.

The incident comes as part of wider protests since late 2019, with police in the country now facing mounting scrutiny.

Watchdog groups have claimed excessive use of force and human rights violations.

Those nationwide protests have called for a reform to the constitution, as well as the resignation of President Sebastian Piñera.

Dozens have been killed, and tens of thousands detained in theunrest.
