Chicago's Iconic Art Institute Lions Decked Out in Face Masks Amid COVID-19 Restrictions

The lions at the Art Institute of Chicago got their own COVID-19 PPE on April 30, in compliance with Illinois Gov Jay Pritzker’s requirement that state residents wear protective face masks in public beginning May 1.

Crews installed giant face masks emblazoned with the Chicago flag on the lions. The Daley Plaza Picasso sculpture received a mask as well.

An April 23 press release from the Illinois governor’s office read: “I know how badly we all want our normal lives back. But this is the part where we have to dig in and understand that the sacrifices we’ve made as a state to avoid a worst-case scenario are working — and we need to keep going a little while longer to finish the job.”

As of April 30, Illinois has reported 52,198 confirmed cases of the coronavirus and 2,355 deaths from COVID-19. Credit: marvinmadeit via Storyful
