Cher Recalls Meeting Bob Mackie, Says She Still Fits Into Most of the Clothes He Made for Her (Exclusive)
The legendary singer told PEOPLE that she and Mackie were a ‘match made in heaven’ from the moment they met
When it comes to Cher's iconic style, costume designer Bob Mackie once said it best: "nobody else can do it like she does."
The pair have been creating memorable style moments throughout her decades-long career and at a May 13 ‘Bob Mackie: Naked Illusion’ event honoring the designer, Cher, 77, recalled some of them during an exclusive chat with PEOPLE.
The 77-year-old singer says she met Mackie during a costume fitting for the 1971 TV special The First Nine Months, in which she starred alongside her musical partner Sonny Bono.
“I see this guy over my shoulder walking in the door and he's beautiful. I turned around and there's this tall, kind of Adonis-looking guy with curly blonde hair and a suntan,” Cher recalls. “And I went, ‘Oh my God, you're so much younger than I thought you'd be,’ He said, ‘You're so much thinner than I thought you'd be.’ And it was kind of like that from then on.”

In that instant, she and Mackie, 84, were a “match made in heaven," Cher says.
Cher and Mackie went on to collaborate on countless ensembles that have gone down in history, including her famous midriff-baring look and feathered headpiece for the 1986 Oscars (below).
While speaking with PEOPLE, the star described one of her favorite looks that Mackie made for her.
“It was kind of [a] beautiful purple and it's chiffon and there's some little dangly things and I just love [it]," she says of the ensemble.

She continues, “And I'm so happy I can get into my clothes.”
When asked if she can still fit into all of her Bob Mackie clothes, Cher replied: “Yes. Well, maybe not all of them.”
Mackie previously reflected on his relationship with Cher and the over-the-top looks he's created for her.
"Nobody was allowed to even design a halter dress until Cher started wearing them on Sonny & Cher [in the ' 70s], and then all of a sudden they were in everybody's collection," the designer said in a 2021 interview with PEOPLE. "And then girls were showing way more skin than they should have, because Cher was showing more skin than she should have. But she looked good in it."
Then he shared one of the secrets to pulling off his eye-catching designs. "You have to have that little thing in your brain, that little sense of humor, that you're wearing it because it's fun to wear, not because it makes you look so fabulous, you know? It's partly the wit.”
