Cheltenham Festival 2024 LIVE! Results, day 3 updates as Inothewayurthinkin wins Kim Muir Challenge Cup

Cheltenham Festival 2024 LIVE!

The action continues at Prestbury Park with a bumper St Patrick’s Thursday schedule at horse racing’s most famous Jumps meet. There are two feature races on the card this afternoon, with Envoi Allen first going for back-to-back victories in the Ryanair Chase for Henry De Bromhead before the running of an intriguing Stayers' Hurdle.

Teahupoo has become the clear favourite for Gordon Elliott, though an impressive field also includes the likes of stablemate Sire Du Berlais, the defending champion, plus the Willie Mullins-trained Sir Gerhard and other former winners including Flooring Porter and Paisley Park. Mullins is out for yet more success after yesterday reaching the huge milestone of 100 Cheltenham winners after Jasmin De Vaux provided his 13th of the week already in the Weatherbys Champion Bumper.

Elsewhere on day 3, we’ve got the Turners Novices' Chase, Pertemps Final, Festival Plate, Mares Novices' Hurdle and Kim Muir Challenge Cup all coming up. Follow all the drama, results and latest tips from the 2024 Cheltenham Festival LIVE below!

Tip - Where It All Began E/W

The eight-year-old Gordon Elliott-trained gelding Where It All Began won a valuable listed race at Punchestown on February 18.

The conditions were testing that day but he showed great stamina and ability to deal with the heavy going, so even if some more rain falls today it will be to his advantage.

He has been upped 12lbs in the handicap as a result of the last win but this tenacious horse can defy that to remain in the fray for at least a place.

Tip - Brighterdaysahead

Brighterdaysahead was highly impressive in bumpers last season, taking home €59,000 for his win at Fairyhouse on April 9.

The five-year-old mare has continued her outstanding form into this season, remaining undefeated after three hurdle outings - the last at Navan on February 11.

She relishes heavy conditions so the heavier the better for the selection. She has tidied up her lack of fluency in her hurdles debut and will look to sit just in behind the leaders and come by in the home straight. The only downside is she's likely to be very short odds.

Gavin Sheehan interview: 'Snowball effect' behind superb season as jockey eyes further Cheltenham glory

Gavin Sheehan has been just about the rider of the British National Hunt season thus far, but anyone coming to this piece in search of the great secret to his upturn will be quickly disappointed.

“I presume people want to know that I'm going down to the gym more and doing more stuff, or whatever - but it’s not,” he tells Standard Sport. “I wouldn’t say everything’s clicked. As a jockey, you just need to get on the right horses and this year I’ve certainly got on more of them.”

Triumph Hurdle favourite Sir Gino ruled out by Nicky Henderson

10:37 , Jonathan Gorrie

Sir Gino, the long-time ante-post favourite for the JCB Triumph Hurdle, has been declared a non-runner on the final day of the Cheltenham Festival.

His absence is the latest blow for trainer Nicky Henderson, who has endured a trying week with four of his five runners on Tuesday pulled up, as well as Jingko Blue in Wednesday's Gallagher Novices' Hurdle.

Having already taken Shishkin out of the Gold Cup and Jonbon out of the Champion Chase, with Constitution Hill ruled out of the Champion Hurdle last week, Henderson's biggest hope of the Festival now joins them on the sidelines.

Albert Bartlett contender Shanagh Bob has also been withdrawn and the Seven Barrows team will try to get their stars back on song for Aintree or Punchestown.

In a statement on X, Henderson said: "Very sadly we have had to make a very tough decision which is not to run Sir Gino in the Triumph Hurdle tomorrow and the same applies to Shanagh Bob in the Albert Bartlett.

"Both horses appear to be in great shape but we cannot ignore the performance of all our horses throughout this week and indeed last week as well and we feel it would be crazy to chance it with two very high class young horses with their lives in front of them.

"Joe Donnelly who owns both of these as well as Shishkin has been incredibly supportive as have all our owners as well as the media and indeed racing as a whole, and we appreciate that enormously.

"We are very much looking forward to hopefully Aintree and Punchestown as soon as we get the team back to normal."

An historic day at Cheltenham on Wednesday!

Willie Mullins reacts to remarkable achievement

09:11 , Jonathan Gorrie

Willie Mullins reached the 100-winner mark at Cheltenham on Wednesday after Jasmin De Daux, ridden by Patrick Mullins, won the Weatherbys Champion Bumper.

"It's a wonderful day, it's fantastic. As much I enjoy what's happening, I think of my colleague and fellow trainer Nicky Henderson and what's happened with his yard this week," Mullins said.

"That's always a worry that we have in the two or three weeks coming up to Cheltenham, that something will come in and bite you from outside. As much as we're enjoying it, I don't know how he must be feeling.

"You want competition and it must be gutting for him. You'd like good opposition to have fun with because I'm sure he would have beaten us a few times this week."

He went on: "I thought my lifetime achievement was when I had a winner here in Cheltenham in the Supreme Novices' Hurdle back in 1995 and who ever dreamt any trainer, never mind me, could do it .

"The team of owners we have help and I can't train winners without a team of owners who have horses and then the team from my wife Jackie, to David Casey, Patrick, Ruby (Walsh), all our head people, it's huge for them. I think they are probably going to enjoy it more than I will. It's extraordinary stuff."

Paying tribute to his son, Mullins said: "For Patrick to do it makes it very special and to do it for one of my biggest owners (Simon Munir and Isaac Souede).

"The team of owners we have make the job what it is, I can't do it without them. They all praise each other when they have a winner and share in each other's disappointment. Without owners I wouldn't be here, none of us would, it's their sport.

"I was really pleased that Patrick was the one to do it because I wasn't sure he was on the right one but he was spot on and I was wrong.

"I'm just delighted, I wouldn't say emotional. When I started out I didn't think anyone would ever train 100 Cheltenham winners and I certainly didn't think it would be me.

"People were saying I should have done it last year!"

Going update

The latest from the racecourse...

Cheltenham Festival: Recap of day two

08:28 , Jonathan Gorrie

The Cross Country Chase was abandoned at the Cheltenham Festival, denying Delta Work a shot at a third victory.

An early morning inspection took place, after 11mm of rainfall on Tuesday, and officials said there had been “no improvement” to conditions.

The Cross Country Chase is run on a different course to the other races at the Festival. With areas of the course deemed “unraceable”, and further rain expected over the next couple of days, the decision was made not to reschedule for Friday, as was initially suggested.

Delta Work has won the Cross Country Chase in each of the last two years and was favourite to match Tiger Roll’s record tally of three victories in the race.

Cheltenham Festival tips: Johnny Ward's best bets for day 3 including Stayers' Hurdle shock

08:25 , Jonathan Gorrie

It has been a gruelling, rain-soaked Cheltenham so far, and there will be no hiding place for the runners in Thursday’s feature Paddy Power Stayers’ Hurdle (3.30).

If there is a future star in this division, it is likely Teahupoo — and his stellar performance so far was when winning the Galmoy at Gowran as a prep for this last year, when the ground was testing. He was, arguably, unlucky here 12 months ago and his chance is obvious.
