Chelsea academy product Trevoh Chalobah has signed a new contract with the Blues, that could see him stay at the club until 2029.
Chopping and changing of the Chelsea side in transfer windows is the norm. That was very much the case over the summer, following Todd Boehly buying the club.
Seven players headed to Stamford Bridge on permanent transfers, and 11 departed. Of those 11, six of the players left at the end of their contracts, and Chelsea did not receive a fee.
Defenders Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen and Marcos Alonso were among that group. Also leaving from the defence was Emerson Palmieri, who went across London to West Ham.
Given the amount of defenders that left, Chalobah might have expected more minutes. Though Wesley Fofana, Kalidou Koulibaly and Marc Cucurella all joining might have changed that.
Indeed, the former pair are both central defenders – Chalobah’s position – and Cucurella can play in the centre.
That threw the academy product’s future up in the air. In fact, there was a fair amount of interest in him in the summer: Tottenham, Inter Milan and Leeds United were among those linked with him.
There have been reports this season that a January loan away from Chelsea could be on the cards for Chalobah.
Those came to light in September, as the centre-back had hardly played a game during the current campaign to that point.
Chalobah pens new long-term contract
However, since Graham Potter took charge, Chalobah has been central to the Blues side. The 23-year-old has completed 90 minutes in each of the Blues’ last seven league games.
He has also played in each of their last four Champions League games. As such, it would seem he is a vital cog in Potter’s system, and a player he wants to keep around.
That is reinforced by the contract Chalobah has just signed.
Chelsea have confirmed that the defender has put pen to paper to a new contract, which will see him stay until at least 2028. There is also an option for the deal to be extended another year, meaning he could remain at Stamford Bridge until 2029.
A contract of that length shows the importance that he has to the club at the moment.
Chalobah delighted with new deal
Chalobah is clearly happy to be remaining with the club he has spent his been with since he was a youth player. He detailed his delight at extending his terms and clearly wants to give back to the club.
“I’m over the moon to sign this contract. It’s been an honour every time I put the shirt on. I want to give my all and do anything for this club,” Chalobah said.
“As everyone knows I’ve been here from a young age and to continue here is every kid’s dream. Whenever I get the chance, I’ll give my all for the club and look for the future ahead.
“I want to say thanks to God for this, without Him none of this would be possible. And just always believing. Thanks to my family as well and the club for trusting in me. I’ll now continue to give my all.”
