Chelsea transfer news: Barcelona in talks over shock deal to sign star who Boehly only landed this month
Chelsea have signed seven players this month and are seemingly not done yet – but one of their January arrivals is already lining up a move to Barcelona, according to reports in Spain.
Todd Boehly has shown unquenchable thirst to sign player after player since taking over at Stamford Bridge. After a crazy summer spend saw eight senior stars arrive in a near £280m spree, they are now on course to match that this month.
Mykhaylo Mudruk, at an initial £62.5m, represents the biggest new arrival so far. However, that fee may soon be annihilated if the Chelsea delegation that has travelled to Lisbon on Monday return with an agreement for Enzo Fernandez.
Indeed, January has been a hugely busy month for the Blues.
It all started with a £10.6m deal for Molde striker David Datro Fofana. Since then, Benoit Badiashile, Andrey Santos, Mudryk, Noni Madueka and most recently Malo Gusto have all signed on the dotted line.
As it stands, the Blues have spent around £160m on permanent signings. Another fee of around £9.7m has been forked out to bring Joao Felix to the club on loan for the remainder of the season.
The move to take the Portuguese star to Stamford Bridge, however, does not contain an option to make the move permanent.
And Atletico Madrid made clear their wish to protect his future by extending his deal by a further year prior to the loan.
However, reports in Spain now claim plans are heating up over a big-money permanent exit for Felix.
Per Sport, Barcelona are determined to sign the 23-year-old this summer and talks over the move are already underway.
Barcelona keen to sign Joao Felix
Attacking exchanges between the two clubs has been commonplace in recent seasons. Indeed, with Antoine Griezmann moving one way then back again, the two clubs also did business over Memphis Depay.
However, the Dutchman’s move to the Wanda Metropolitano saw Barcelona seemingly make a preliminary enquiry over the possibility of a summer deal for Felix.
Now it seems those talks are heating up. To that end, Sport suggests Atletico are potentially willing to sell if they receive around £75m for the star.
And Barcelona reportedly hope to fund the move by allowing Ferran Torres to depart, with a Premier League duo seemingly keen.
Felix has played just once for Chelsea since his move; the 2-1 loss at Fulham on January 12. However, the game ended abruptly for Felix, who saw red for an ugly challenge on 58 minutes.
Forced to serve a three-match suspension, he’s not been able to kick a ball for Chelsea since. Felix will complete his ban on Friday when the Blues host Fulham in the return fixture.
He can nexy play on Saturday 11 February at West Ham. But that will only leave him witht 17 league games – plus any in the Champions League – to impress.
Whether Atleti’s apparent willingness to sell Felix will change Chelsea’s thoughts on the matter remain to be seen. But after the inglorious start to his Bridge career, the jury remains out on that one at this stage.
