Chelsea summer signing labelled a ‘disaster’ already as pundit suggests fringe man is better

Chelsea summer signing Axel Disasi has been labelled a “disaster” as Andy Jacobs suggested the new centre-back is no better than Trevoh Chalobah, who the Blues are willing to sell.

Chelsea have made a habit of recruiting a lot of players in each window since Todd Boehly assumed control of the club. Since the club was taken over in early 2022, they’ve spent over £800million in three windows.

That has meant for a lot of movement in and out of the club this summer. Indeed, eight players have joined the club, while 18 have walked out the door; some on loan, but the majority permanently.

There may still be some incomings and outgoings before the end of the season. One man who joined the club this summer, Disasi, is already being criticised by talkSPORT pundit Jacobs.

“You’ve bought this bloke Disasi, disaster. Is he better than Chalobah? Looking at him he isn’t. So why have you bought him?” Jacobs said on talkSPORT.

Jacobs was reacting after just Disasi’s second competitive match in a Blues shirt, a 3-1 loss to West Ham United. It feels unfair to criticise him after just two games, which is surely too soon to make a judgement.

The £38million signing may indeed have pushed Chalobah out the door, though. It was reported after Disasi was signed that the Chelsea academy graduate had been told he was allowed to leave.

If it turns out that Disasi is not as good for the Blues as Chalobah is – though he’s not pulled up trees – then in hindsight, spending that sum on a player when you’ve got somebody just as good already there will have been the wrong choice.

But that Chelsea have signed four centre-backs over the past two summers and Chalobah played 25 Premier League games last season – starting 18 of those – suggests the Blues don’t rate him that highly, answering the question of why Disasi has been signed.

If they do sell Chalobah, all of the fee will be banked as profit given he came through their academy, which for a side that spends so much money is obviously a good thing in terms of keeping in line with Financial FairPlay regulations.
