Chelsea are reportedly in ‘pole position’ to sign Matthijs de Ligt, with the Juventus star Thomas Tuchel’s ‘first choice’ target this summer.

Tuchel is looking to overhaul the Blues squad this summer in tandem with new owner Todd Boehly, who has also just been announced as the club’s interim sporting director following the departure of Marina Granovskaia.

The duo are reportedly discussing replacement options for Romelu Lukaku, who has returned on loan to Inter Milan, with five names thought to be on their shortlist.

But defensive reinforcements are also a priority following the departure of Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen.

Sevilla’s Jules Kounde is still their top target but his representatives are said to be growing impatient, while Milan Skriniar, Josko Gvardiol and Pau Torres are also said to be on their radar.

As is De Ligt, who has been frequently linked with a move away from Juventus amid discord over a new contract.

The Serie A side are pushing for the 22-year-old to extend his contract beyond 2024, with the club in ‘continuous contact’ with his agent, Rafaela Pimenta, according to Calciomercato (via Sport Witness).

The Old Lady want to extend his deal by a further two years, reducing his salary from €11m to €8m per year, while lowering his release clause from €120m to €80m, which can be activated next year.

De Ligt has so far rebuffed the offer as with ‘other clubs in the background’, including Chelsea.

The report claims the Blues are ‘in pole position’ to sign De Ligt, who is the ‘first choice’ target for Tuchel.

Meanwhile, Former Chelsea star Frank Leboeuf believes Boehly and Tuchel should focus purely on their defence and give up trying to find a goalscorer.

When asked who Chelsea should sign to replace Lukaku, Leboeuf said: “No one. I think that’s not the priority for Chelsea.

“If you only care about the headlines you talk about Lewandowski or Sterling and some other class-A players. But you have to look elsewhere in the team.

“You need central defenders. I want to talk about [Jules] Kounde, about right-backs and a new midfielder. This is where they need to look.

“They’ve been looking for a top-scorer for two years, it hasn’t worked. They have talented players that have to settle in and get confidence.

“But finding a striker is not a priority. I want to see Chelsea make clever signings rather than try to make headlines with a striker because that’s not a priority.”
