Chelsea could face a huge compensation bill after making an approach to Brighton for Graham Potter, according to reports.

The Blues hierarchy made the controversial decision to sack Thomas Tuchel on Wednesday morning after their 1-0 defeat to Dinamo Zagreb on Tuesday night.

Widespread reports have insisted that the Chelsea owners had been doubting their working relationship with Tuchel for a while now with results not helping his cause.

Is Thomas Tuchel sacking really a SHOCK or brutal? Even Avram was better for Chelsea

They are now looking for a replacement with the Daily Telegraph claiming that the new manager could be in place before their next match against Fulham on Saturday.

And now a fresh report in the Daily Telegraph claims that Chelsea have ‘made an approach to Brighton’ for Potter’s services ‘just hours’ after sacking Tuchel.

Chelsea ‘would face a bill of about £10 million to buy Potter out of his Brighton contract, on top of having to pay Tuchel compensation on a contract that was not due to expire until 2024’.

Their good relationship with Brighton could help Chelsea owner Todd Boehly get the ‘swift appointment’ he desires with Potter ‘the clear favourite for the job’.

The Daily Telegraph add:

‘Chelsea’s owners want to make a long-term appointment of somebody they believe can create and cultivate a new culture within the club, who is ready to listen to their ideas and explain his own philosophies.’

Speaking on Sky Sports News, reporter Rob Dorsett confirmed that Chelsea have now been given permission to speak to Potter about the job at Stamford Bridge.

He claims Potter will ‘travel to London and meet Boehly this afternoon’ with the journalist expecting things to ‘move quickly’ now.

On top of their £10m bill to Brighton, the Daily Mail insist that sacking Tuchel ‘is set to cost the club around £15m’ taking the total price of sacking and hiring a new manager to around £25m.

It will cost £13m to relieve Tuchel of his duties, while the German’s backroom staff will be owed about £2m between them as they are expected to follow him out the door.

Another boss to be linked with the vacant manager’s job at Chelsea is Mauricio Pochettino, who is currently without a club, but former Crystal Palace chairman Simon Jordan thinks he would be a step backwards for the Blues.

“They’ve obviously got someone lined up, they’ve made a decision,” Jordan told talkSPORT. “And God forbid I hope it’s not [Mauricio] Pochettino, but it may well be.

Jordan added: “I think if you look at his [Tuchel’s] record at PSG and Dortmund, it’s far more compelling than Pochettino,” Jordan added.

“Look at the comparison of the results he got at PSG in terms of getting them to a Champions League final, they lost. He won two doubles in France, Pochettino got in the door and did nothing but complain and agitate and index himself to jobs.

“Pochettino is a figment of the media’s imagination. He did a lot of good work at Tottenham with a very good group of players that had an opportunity to be far more successful.

“They choked in the Champions League final, they choked in the Premier League. I’m not a Pochettino admirer, I think he’s a good manager but if you want to be an elite football club Pochettino is not your answer.”
