Chelsea are now in ‘direct talks’ with Paris Saint-Germain over a deal for Presnel Kimpembe, despite their new manager “laughing about” the rumours.
The Blues are looking to secure centre-back signings this summer following the departures of both Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen at the end of their contracts.
They’ve already landed Kalidou Koulibaly from Napoli for £34m, but failed to lure Nathan Ake back to Stamford Bridge with the Dutch international still part of Pep Guardiola’s plans at Manchester City.
The gossip included details of Chelsea reigniting their interest in long-term target Jules Kounde, while Thomas Tuchel is keen on Kimpembe, with whom he worked in his time as PSG boss.
And transfer expert Fabrizio Romano now claims the Blues are in ‘direct talks’ with PSG over a move for the French international.
That will likely come as a surprise to new PSG boss Christophe Galtier, who says he laughed about the speculation with Kimpembe.
Galtier told L’Equipe: “I’ve read everything that has been said about Kimpembe.
“We even laughed about it together. I like him – he’s a great centre back but what will happen, I don’t know.”
Romano adds that while PSG ‘consider Kimpembe part of the project’, they would be willing to let him leave if they received a ‘good proposal’.
They are thought to want £55m for his services, but Chelsea are working on a bid of around £40m.
On his move to Chlsea, Koulibaly told his new club’s official website: “I’m very happy to be here with this team at Chelsea. It’s a big team in the world and my dream was always to play in the Premier League.
“Chelsea first came to get me in 2016 but we didn’t quite make it. Now when they came to me I accepted it because they really wanted me to come to the Premier League to play for them.”
