Soaring seven stories above London’s hip Covent Garden neighborhood, the patinated-copper dome of the One Aldwych hotel evokes a special blend of Edwardian grandeur and Parisian elegance. But it’s the hotel’s interiors—recently renovated by designer Robert Angell for the first time in its 20-year history—that are truly the showstopper. Here, ED gets an exclusive first look at the Dome Suite, the crown jewel of One Aldwych.

The original interiors cast off the traditional flowery British upholstery in favor of what would become known as the boutique-hotel style, according to Angell. “But fast-forward 20 years, and the hotel guest of today is more exposed to design, trends, and styles and has traveled more than any other previous generation,” he says. “Our challenge, then, was to create a series of guest bedrooms and suites that reflect the way in which we live our lives now.”

Angell and his team injected soft, muted colors into the suite, taking special care with the rotunda, which was transformed from an underused dining room into a master suite. Both the intricately detailed plaster ceiling and classic wood-paneled walls were restored, and a custom-designed glass pendant with floating oak leaves is a contemporary nod to the acanthus leaves on the column capitals. In addition, the majority of the furnishings and lighting were designed by British manufacturers with the suite’s curves in mind.

And because the hotel is not attached to any other buildings, it offers 360-degree views of the London skyline. “One Aldwych is a stunning landmark that sits at the heart of Covent Garden,” Angell says. “In essence, we wanted to keep its uniqueness, its iconic prowess, its sense of style, and its luxury appeal...but to bring it into the 21st century.”
