ChatGPT breaks daily traffic records after launching new features

ChatGPT has been breaking daily traffic records since it recently launched new features, according to Similarweb.

Following OpenAI unveiling a new artificial intelligence model, GPT-4o, last week, the ChatGPT website received over 100 million visits in the two days following the announcement, according to SimilarWeb. The website for the chatbot is on the path to “record well over 2 billion visits this month, beating its previous peak of 1.8 billion in May 2023,” based on traffic data from the first 17 days of May.

“For the first 17 days of May, traffic averaged 17.8 million daily visits. If it continues at that level, the monthly total would be 2.3 billion visits,” SimilarWeb reported. “The previous monthly record was 1.8 billion visits in May 2023. Even if traffic slows in the last weeks of the month, a total of more than 2 billion visits seems likely.”

OpenAI’s Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati said that GPT-4o has “GPT-4 level intelligence,” however, it is faster and improves the abilities of the system in text, vision and audio.

“This is really shifting the paradigm into the future of collaboration, where this interaction becomes much more natural and far, far easier,” Murati said.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has also said that the new model would be accessible to all users of the ChatGPT AI chatbot, including those who use it for free, in a post on the social platform X.
