Charli xcx didn't realize her Brat-related political post would go wild on social media.
In a cover story interview with New York magazine released Monday, Aug. 26, the pop star, 32, said that her "music is not political" despite crafting a viral post where she said, "kamala IS brat."
According to Charli, the reference was something she meant as “something positive and lighthearted” rather than as a means for endorsing a candidate.

But the "Apple" singer also elaborated on her beliefs during the conversation.
“To be on the right side of democracy, the right side of women’s rights, is hugely important to me,” Charli said, adding: “I’m happy to help to prevent democracy from failing forever.”
The "Sympathy Is a Knife" performer said she "obviously knew what I was doing" with her viral "Kamala is Brat" post, however she didn't expect it to get as many eyeballs on it as it did.
“Did I think me talking about being a messy bitch and, like, partying and needing a Bic lighter and a pack of Marlboro Lights would end up on CNN? No.”
Charli added that she's never wanted or pretended to be a "political artist."
“I’m not Bob Dylan, and I’ve never pretended to be,” she said.
Charli continued: "My music is not political. Everything I do in my life feeds back into my art. Everything I say, wear, think, enjoy — it all funnels back into my art. Politics doesn’t feed my art.”

"kamala [sic] IS brat," Charli xcx wrote on X (formerly Twitter), referring to the title of her latest album, which was released on June 7.
