The Changeling Finale Recap: Apollo’s Hunt for His Family Leads to Even Bigger Questions — and an Untimely Death

If you watched Friday’s season finale of The Changeling and still have questions about the dark, odd fairytale that’s entangled Apollo’s family, rest assured: You are not alone.

In the beginning of the episode, we’re told that in 1825, a group of Norwegians fled to the United States seeking religious freedom. But the journey was incredibly arduous, as heavy seas capsized the boat many times over. How did they make it alive? “They had help,” the narrator tells us.

Apollo learns from William Wheeler that Kinder Garten is actually a collective of 10,000 men sharing the same name. As the winds pick up around the island and monstrous grumbles emerge, Wheeler says he “called in the cavalry.” Something’s coming and it sounds big. Apollo races to find Cal and the rest of the island’s inhabitants, only to see buildings explode all around him. Greta doesn’t make it, but not all is lost. Cal and a group of survivors emerge from the darkness, and they all set out to escape the horror.

The group arrives to a cliff overlooking the water and everyone starts to descend on a rope. Apollo takes a young child with him, as the creature and William roar and cackle in the darkness. After a hairy fall, everyone survives and makes it to a large ship that awaits them. Only Cal says Apollo must use a creek boat. “Trust me,” she says. (Uh, how about NO!)

Cal says the last time she saw Emma, Emma was glowing as she paddled out into the river to find her son. “Brian is in the forest,” is the last thing Emma said, and there’s only one forest in New York City. With that, Cal pushes Apollo’s boat into the water and he paddles out.

Cal climbs back up that massive cliffside for one last encounter with William. After a rough and tumble in the rain, William says, “She’s going to kill you.” Cal replies that she won’t give her the satisfaction. (The voodoo witch? The creature? Your guess is as good as mine.) She stabs William in the chest, then takes a leap off the cliff, killing herself.

In the last few minutes, we see Emma walking toward a carousel that’s glowing bright in the night, while Apollo finally reaches land. He finds what we can only presume is his son’s tomb, and when he opens it, a crying baby bites him in the finger. (Is it a changeling?!) He then crawls through a cave and when it looks like he reaches a dead end, an enormous creature’s eyeball opens and the screen cuts to black. It looks like he has finally found the thing that goes bump in the night.
