Celebrities pay tribute to Ruth Bader Ginsburg as the US Supreme Court judge dies
The news that US Supreme Court judge Ruth Bader Ginsburg has died has been met with heartbreak by members of the public and celebrities, who have taken to social media to express their sadness at the news.
Ginsburg, who was the oldest justice and the second ever woman to sit on the Supreme Court, died on Friday of metastatic pancreatic cancer at her home in Washington, DC, surrounded by her family, the court said.
"Our Nation has lost a jurist of historic stature," Chief Justice John Roberts said in a statement on Friday. "We at the Supreme Court have lost a cherished colleague. Today we mourn, but with confidence that future generations will remember Ruth Bader Ginsburg as we knew her - a tireless and resolute champion of justice."
She was a prominent feminist, known for defending abortion rights and same-sex marriage. In recent years, her fame has skyrocketed, and she's become something of a meme-able icon to women around the world. She inspired the #NotoriousRBG hashtag and the nickname that followed.
Politicians and celebrities have been leading tributes online to her legacy, with Barack Obama calling her: "a warrior for gender equality — someone who believed that equal justice under law only had meaning if it applied to every single American," in a statement for Medium.
Fellow public figures have followed his lead online:
Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg fought to the end, through her cancer, with unwavering faith in our democracy and its ideals. That’s how we remember her. But she also left instructions for how she wanted her legacy to be honored. My statement: https://t.co/Wa6YcT5gDi

Ruth Bader Ginsburg was the kind of scholar and patriot you get excited about explaining to your kids. The kind of person who you say “who knows, one day you could be HER”. I hope you rest well, RBG, you must have been tired from changing the world.
