CBBC series The Next Step has been praised by fans after airing the first same-sex kiss in its seven-year history.
Canadian teen drama series The Next Step is a mockumentary-style drama that follows the members of a dance troupe from the titular dance studio as they train for and compete in various championships.
In the show's latest episode 'Room Service', which premiered on CBBC on Wednesday (July 22), Cleo (Dani Verayo) was upset a decision made by Summer (Sage Linder), prompting Jude (Molly Sanders) to help her through her doubts that B-Troupe would be able to successfully get to Nationals.
And, after Cleo and Jude shared a heart-to-heart, the pair performed a romantic duet together to 'Brave' by Shane Harte, which ended with Cleo and Jude sharing a kiss.
"Cleo and I are opposites in a lot of ways. Which is why we balance each other," Jude noted in the programme.
"I soften her edges, and she's helped me to dream bigger. Cleo means the world to me [...] When I dance with Cleo, I forget about everything. It's just her. We're dancing together and all I see is her."
"When I dance with Jude, I feel safe and free all at the same time," Cleo added. "When we dance together, it's like magic."
After the moment premiered on the CBBC show, fans were quick to praise the show online, declaring it a huge step forward for representation.
"When kids [shows] have representation like this it honestly makes me so happy because I know there are kids out there who will feel less alone than I did," one viewer wrote. "Thank you @cbbc @thenextstep."
"YES! I'm so proud of how far The Next Step has come and how it's helped pioneer CBBC," another added.
