Catalan separatists protest in Barcelona as ex-leader Carles Puigdemont is arrested in Italy

The footage shows hundreds of people protesting in front of the Italian consulate in Barcelona after the arrest of former Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont, which took place on Thursday night at Alghero airport. The demonstrators waved the Catalan flag asking for freedom and independence. Puigdemont was stopped by the border police in Sardinia after the Spanish Supreme Tribunal issued an arrest order. Catalan separatists argue that the order was suspended by the Court of Justice of the European Union in Luxembourg. Spain has accused Mr Puigdemont of sedition, saying he helped organise a 2017 independence referendum deemed illegal by Spanish courts.
