Catalan separatists call for independence at summit

STORY: Part of the protesters moved towards the French consulate in Barcelona, where some separatists clashed with police when trying to reach Sant Jaume square.

Waving pro-independence "estelada" flags and holding signs reading "Neither Spain, nor France," they chanted separatist slogans ahead of the arrival of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and French President Emmanuel Macron.

Catalonia launched a failed independence bid 2017.

Carles Puigdemont, the leader of the attempt to separate from Spain, is in self-imposed exile in Belgium to avoid prosecution in Spain.
