The Cast of “Twisters”: Meet the Next Generation of Oklahoma Storm Chasers
28 years after the original 'Twister,' the Daisy Edgar Jones and Glen Powell-led sequel 'Twisters' hits theatres on July 19
Nearly three decades after the original summer blockbuster Twister thrilled audiences with its storm-chasing action, the franchise is making a dramatic return with Twisters.
Directed by Lee Isaac Chung and written by Mark L. Smith, the forthcoming film promises to deliver all the tornado-fueled excitement of its predecessor while introducing a fresh, contemporary storyline. The film stars Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell, Kiernan Shipka, Anthony Ramos and others, each bringing their own unique flair to the roles of daring storm chasers.
Set against the backdrop of Oklahoma’s notorious Tornado Alley, Twisters follows the adventures of Tyler Owens, a social media influencer known as the "Tornado Wrangler," played by Powell, and Kate, a reluctant storm tracker portrayed by Edgar-Jones. Their journey is packed with drama, scientific discovery and, of course, jaw-dropping tornado encounters.
The first trailer for Twisters dropped during the 2024 Super Bowl, giving a glimpse of the intense storm-chasing scenes that await. With a release date set for July 19, 2024, the film is poised to bring awe and terror to the big screen once again.
Here's everything to know about the star-studded cast of Twisters.

Daisy Edgar-Jones as Kate
Edgar-Jones stars as Kate, a storm chaser who has retreated to a more cautious life after a traumatic tornado encounter. Persuaded by her friend Javi, played by Ramos, Kate returns to the field to test groundbreaking storm-chasing technology.
The British actress rose to fame with her breakout role in the critically acclaimed series Normal People in 2020. She has since starred in War of the Worlds, Under the Banner of Heaven and the film adaptation of Where the Crawdads Sing. Her performances have earned her widespread recognition and numerous award nominations, including two Golden Globe nominations — one for best actress in 2021 and best supporting actress in 2023.
Edgar-Jones has expressed her excitement about working on Twisters, noting the film’s intense action sequences and the camaraderie among the cast.
“Because there’s so much car-based action in the movie, I was always behind the wheel, doing some very speedy driving,” Edgar-Jones told Pinkvilla. “I’m ready for a job in the next Fast & Furious movie because of Twisters."
While the London native tends to keep her personal life private, she’s recently been linked to photographer Ben Seed.
Glen Powell as Tyler Owens
Powell plays Tyler Owens, a charismatic and reckless storm chaser with a significant social media following. Known as the "Tornado Wrangler," Tyler's thrill-seeking nature brings both excitement and tension to the film.
Powell has made a name for himself with roles in Scream Queens, Everybody Wants Some!!, Hidden Figures and Top Gun: Maverick. He recently starred in the rom-com blockbuster Anyone But You alongside Sydney Sweeney, and the Netflix comedy Hit Man.
Powell, who grew up in Austin, has been open about balancing both the passion and business sides of being an actor.
“Small, intimate movies are also on my bingo board of things I want to do,” Powell told The New York Times in June 2024. “But rewatchable is an important word. This is where I think actors who want to be serious get it wrong.”
Powell has described Twisters as a movie with “a lot of heart,” noting the ways in which the film aligns with his intentions as an actor.
“I think it’s got a lot of heart, this movie, and it’s really the reason I started in this business is to tell stories that weren’t just critical, or commercial, or for an indie audience, or a populist audience,” Powell IndieWire in May 2024. “I want to tell stories that really bring those things together, and I think Twisters is a great example of that.”
Powell is set to produce and star in the Hulu series Chad Powers, a comedy series based on an Eli Manning sketch where the NFL star goes undercover as a college football walk-on.
Anthony Ramos as Javi
Ramos portrays Javi, a storm chaser and friend of Kate who believes he has developed a groundbreaking tornado-tracking method.
Ramos is best known for his role in the original Broadway cast of Hamilton. He has since appeared in A Star Is Born, In the Heights, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts and Dumb Money.
He is engaged to actress Jasmine Cephas Jones, whom he met while working on Hamilton.
Maura Tierney
Tierney's role in Twisters has yet to be revealed, but she told NewBeauty in June 2024 that her character may not be in the eye of the storm.
“I won’t call my role a cameo, but let’s just say I don’t chase any Twisters,” adding, “I’m more of the farmer mom.”
Known for her roles in ER, The Affair and The Good Wife, Tierney has expressed praise and excitement for Twisters, noting that the film’s director was a primary factor in her joining the film.
“I was excited to work with Isaac [director Lee Isaac Chung],” Tierney told NewBeauty. “That was the main thing that was propelling me to get involved in this project.”
The actress is also an advocate for breast cancer awareness after being diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer in 2009.
Brandon Perea
Perea gained widespread recognition for his role as Angel Torres in Jordan Peele's Nope and for his performance in the Netflix series The OA, where he played Alfonso "French" Sosa.
Perea has expressed excitement about joining the cast of Twisters, noting his childhood fascination with tornadoes.
“When I was a kid, I used to be obsessed with tornadoes,” Perea told Elle in May 2024. “The spectacle of actually seeing a tornado was always the wildest thing.”
Sasha Lane
Sasha Lane appears in Twisters, though her role has not been revealed. She has described her involvement with the project as “fun,” noting the way the film has also turned her into somewhat of a “nerd.”
“This role is so different compared to The Crowded Room,” Lane told Nylon in June 2023. “I really just get to have fun and just tinker with new things. I've been learning so much about weather. I'm such a weather nerd now. It's so fascinating to me.”
Lane made her acting debut in American Honey and has since appeared in The Miseducation of Cameron Post, Hellboy and How to Blow Up a Pipeline, as well as starring in television series such as Utopia, Loki and Conversations with Friends. She also starred as Ariana in the Apple TV+ crime series The Crowded Room.
She has a daughter, Aster, born in 2020.
Daryl McCormack
McCormack is best known for his role in Good Luck to You, Leo Grande, and has appeared in Peaky Blinders, The Wheel of Time, Bad Sisters and The Woman in the Wall.
The Irish actor has spoken about the exciting and challenging nature of working on Twisters.
“When I heard that they were doing a remake, I thought, oh my God, that’s a lot of pressure on this because the first one did so well, but I think Lee Isaac Chung is such an interesting choice because he’s a really sensitive director,” McCormack told The Hollywood Reporter in June 2023. “I don’t see how he can make a film like this and not make it feel intimate, so that’s what I’m excited about.”
In May 2024, it was announced he’d be joining the cast of Rian Johnson’s highly anticipated Knives Out 3, per Variety.
Kiernan Shipka
Shipka brings a wealth of experience and a dedicated fanbase to the film.
Best known for her roles as Sally Draper in Mad Men and Sabrina Spellman in The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Shipka has also voiced Jinora in The Legend of Korra and starred in The Blackcoat’s Daughter and Totally Killer.
According to Deadline, she will next star in the action-thriller Stone Cold Fox, a revenge thriller set in the 1980s that will begin filming this summer.
Nik Dodani
Dodani is best known for his role as Zahid in the Netflix series Atypical. He has also appeared in the CBS revival of Murphy Brown, Escape Room and Dear Evan Hansen.
Born in Dallas and raised in Phoenix, Dodani has been vocal about his experiences as a gay Indian-American actor.
“Being an Indian and openly gay kid from the suburbs of Arizona, I struggled a lot with being authentically myself,” Dodani told Entertainment Weekly in September 2021. “It's important to share that message with audiences.” Dondani added that he’s passionate about expanding South Asian representation in Hollywood.
“What Black Hollywood has done is exactly what I want to be a part of for South Asian Hollywood and create this whole ecosystem of incredible talent and projects that center and star us and are made by us and are for us,” Dodani said.
