West Midlands Police have arrested a man on suspicion of money laundering after he was found in a Coventry McDonald’s car park with a safe containing up to £30,000 in cash.
The police force shared footage on Facebook of an officer opening the safe and piles of cash falling out onto the floor.
Police said they received reports the man was seen with a knife, and they found him in a car park at Gallagher Retail Park on Wednesday, October 7.
While they didn’t find a weapon, they did discover a safe on the back seat of a car.
“We’ve seized the money – which we suspect could be ill-gotten drugs profits – and the safe will be examined for any traces of illegal substances,” the force said.
West Midlands police said the 24-year-old man, from Coventry, was questioned on suspicion of theft and money laundering.
“He refused to account for the money or give any indication where it came from. He has been released under investigation while our enquiries continue. If he can’t prove he’s accrued the money legally we’ll look to seize it permanently under the Proceeds of Crime Act,” the police statement said. Credit: West Midlands Police via Storyful
