Jamie Carragher has criticised Cristiano Ronaldo over his interview with Piers Morgan and claims only 1 per cent of Man Utd fans will support him.
The Portugal international spent much of the summer reportedly looking to leave Old Trafford after the Red Devils failed to qualify for the Champions League.
Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag insisted ahead of the season that he saw Ronaldo as part of his plans at the club and the 37-year-old stayed after a lack of interest in his services.
Ronaldo has struggled for get into Ten Hag’s starting XI in the Premier League and made his feelings clear when he refused to come off the bench in a 2-0 win over Tottenham last month.
The Man Utd striker was fined and made to train on his own before apologising to Ten Hag and returning to first-team training the following week.
But in a explosive interview with Piers Morgan on Sunday night, Ronaldo said he would never respect Ten Hag as the Dutchman doesn’t respect him.
Ronaldo said: “I don’t have respect for him because he doesn’t show respect for me. If you don’t have respect for me, I’m never gonna have respect for you.”
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner also insisted that Ten Hag and some Man Utd senior executives attempted to force him out of the club in the summer.
Ronaldo said: “Yes, not only the coach but the other two or three guys – they’re around the club.” When pressed, Ronaldo added: “Yes, I feel betrayed. And I felt that some people, they don’t want me here. Not only this year, but last year too.”
He also highlighted the lack of improvements around the club since his time there earlier in his career, Ronaldo continued: “I don’t know what’s going on but since Sir Alex Ferguson left I saw no evolution in the club, the progress was zero. For example we have an interesting point that, how the club as Manchester United after [they] sack Ole, they buy – they bring, sports director Ralf Rangnick, which is something that nobody understands.
“This guy is not even a coach. A bigger club like Manchester United brings [a] sports director – surprised not only me but all the world, you know.
“Nothing changed. Surprisingly. Not only the pool, the jacuzzi, even the gym… Even some points, the technology, the kitchen, the chefs, which is, I appreciate, lovely persons. They stopped in a time, which surprised me a lot.
“I thought I will see different things… different, as I mentioned before, technology, infrastructure. But unfortunately, we see many things that I used to see, when I was 20, 21, 23. So, it surprised me a lot.”
And Carragher thinks the Man Utd striker has handled his situation at the club “badly” and reckons only one per cent of fans will support him, including Rio Ferdinand, Roy Keane and Patrice Evra.
Carragher wrote on Twitter: “Ronaldo: ‘I don’t respect the manager’.
“Ronaldo under Erik Ten Hag: Announced he wanted to leave, refused to come on as a substitute, walked off the bench and left before the game had finished.
“99% of United fans will be on the side of ETH, which shows how badly Ronaldo has handled this.”
When asked by a fan on Twitter whether his 99 per cent claim was a bit dramatic, Carragher added; “Only the Ronaldo cranks [will support him]. The 1% will be Rio [Ferdinand], Roy [Keane] and Patrice [Evra]…”
