Carlton Queen Passengers 'Thrown Overboard' and Left 'Clinging to Debris' as Yacht Capsizes in Red Sea

A passenger aboard a 138-foot “dive adventure” yacht that capsized in the Red Sea said passengers were “trapped,” “thrown overboard,” and left “clinging onto debris” in the water after the vessel tipped over near Hurghada, Egypt, on April 24.

Footage from passengers shows the Carlton Queen on its side. Other vessels can be seen coming to assist as passengers scale the sinking ship, attempting to stay out of the water.

Toby Meadows was a passenger onboard the Carlton Queen along with his brother, Kris. Toby Meadows told Storyful of the harrowing experience.

“Some of our fellow guests were thrown overboard and survived by clinging onto debris that had been tossed over, whilst six of our fellow passengers were trapped below the waterline and were only able to escape through some amazing heroical efforts on their part,” Meadows said.

Divernet.com, who reported extensively on the capsizing of the Carlton Queen, said all guests and crew were rescued from the vessel, though some with minor injuries.

Meadows added that a GoFundMe had been set up for the divers on board, many of whom had lost their equipment and other belongings.

The Carlton Queen, owned by Carlton Fleet, was a liveaboard yacht carrying divers on various routes in the Red Sea.

An investigation into the cause of the capsizing is ongoing, a statement from Carlton Fleet cited by Divernet.com and Scubadivermag.com, said. Credit: Toby Meadows via Storyful
