Cargill, striking workers reach tentative deal in Guelph

Cargill and the union representing its striking workers held meetings earlier this week which both sides say has resulted in a tentative agreement.

The United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) local 175 met with Cargill negotiators on Tuesday and agreed on a memorandum of settlement. Both parties say they look forward to ending this labour dispute.

"We will be having meetings [Friday] with the membership and there will be a vote conducted between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Saturday," said Sam Caetano, director of UFCW region six.

Caetano said Saturday's votes will be counted as soon as voting closes.

Until then, UFCW said striking duties will continue and have asked all workers to continue attending their assigned picket shifts.

Chuck Miller, a spokesperson for Cargill, told CBC News that they "look forward and are optimistic to the union voting and ratifying this agreement."

"We've been concerned about the impact this labour disruption has had on our employees and their families," he said.
