KUALA LUMPUR, July 4 — Caretaker Selangor menteri besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari today debunked news reports claiming the state government would increase water tariffs for the Klang Valley this year.

Amirudin said that the state government has no current plans to raise the utility rates.

“I am referring to some news reports which claimed that water tariffs in the Klang Valley will increase this year.

“Water tariff is a basic policy that requires the decision and approval of the state administration. Until today, the state government has not made any decision to increase the water tariff in Selangor,” he said in a statement.

Amirudin said the state administration was working to support the people’s economic survival efforts, instead of burdening the public.

“The state government is committed to ensuring that the water service system that supplies water to more than 8.4 million residents in the states of Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, and Putrajaya continues to be strengthened,” he said.

Earlier, Harian Metro and several other news portals reported that the water tariffs for domestic users would be increased this year to ensure the sustainability of the water supply to more than 9.1 million users in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya.

Air Selangor Sdn Bhd acting chief executive officer Abas Abdullah reportedly said the firm hoped for tariffs to be adjusted soon to ensure that the utility’s income would be able to cover all of its expenditure.

“Therefore, it is time for the domestic water tariff to be reviewed and increased at a reasonable rate after 17 years of no increase being imposed,” he was quoted as saying.
