Canelo Alvarez finishes Caleb Plant for undisputed super middleweight title

He’s now undisputed and unchallenged.

Canelo Alvarez proved yet again why he’s considered the best fighter in the world, using a brutal body attack to wear down previously unbeaten Caleb Plant and stop him in the 11th round Saturday at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. As a result, Alvarez won the undisputed super middleweight championship, becoming the first Latino to hold an undisputed crown in the four-belt era.

Alvarez added Plant’s IBF belt to the WBA-WBC-WBO belts he brought with him to the ring. He vowed before the fight to beat up Plant and make him pay for comments at a news conference he did not like, and he did just that.

It wasn’t Alvarez’s best performance by a long shot, but it was more than enough to handle Plant. Plant tried to jab to keep Alvarez off of him, but Alvarez went over and over to the left hook.

It was the punch that eventually won him the fight. He dropped Plant with the left hook to hurt him badly in the 11th round. When Plant got up, he staggered around and Alvarez was like a shark with blood in the water.

He dropped him with a combination along the ropes a second time and referee Russell Mora stopped it at 1:05 of the 11th to give Alvarez the victory.

It made him only the sixth undisputed champion in the four-belt era, joining Bernard Hopkins, Jermain Taylor, Terence Crawford, Oleksandr Usyk and Josh Taylor.

“I’m proud to be one of the six,” Alvarez said.

He’s the best fighter in the world and there seems to be nothing holding him back from going after the undisputed belt at 175 pounds now. He had a crown placed upon his head and clearly reveled in the history he had created.

The undisputed crown was the idea of his trainer/manager Eddy Reynoso, and Alvarez executed it perfectly.

“It means so much in the history of Mexico to be an undisputed champion,” Alvarez said.

Alvarez said Plant made the fight difficult but he stuck with the game plan and it paid off.
