Candyman, the long-awaited reboot from the minds of Nia DaCosta and Jordan Peele, has been given a new release date after its premiere was delayed to 2021.

As the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic continues to disrupt the movie industry, and with some titles reluctant to open in cinemas, Candyman became the latest in a long line to delay its premiere, confirming in September that it would not open in October as planned.

Now, TheWrap is reporting Nia DaCosta's Candyman will open in cinemas on August 27, 2021, just a few weeks after its delay was first announced.

The remake of the iconic 1992 horror had hoped to open in cinemas on June 12, before rescheduling to October 16. Fans will now have to wait a further 10 months to see the mirror-dwelling demon return to the big screen.

Explaining the decision to hold out for a cinema debut, director Nia DaCosta said that she, Jordan Peele, and Win Rosenfeld had written the story to be "seen in theaters".

"Not just for the spectacle but because the film is about community and stories – how they shape each other, how they shape us," she continued. "It's about the collective experience of trauma and joy, suffering and triumph, and the stories we tell around it.

"We wanted the horror and humanity of Candyman to be experienced in a collective, a community, so we're pushing Candyman to next year, to ensure that everyone can see the film, in theaters, and share in that experience."

Candyman is now set for release on August 27, 2021.
