Four people died in the hours-long chaos after former U.S. President Donald Trump urged supporters to march to the Capitol and "fight like hell." One police officer died on that day after battling rioters and four later died by suicide. Around 140 police officers were injured. U.S. prosecutors have brought criminal charges against at least 725 people linked to the riot.
Congressman Jamie Raskin urged those attending the vigil to pay tribute to the officers who defended the Capitol.
"I'm going to observe the first anniversary of January 6th by celebrating the people who defended our lives and our democracy on January 6th ," he said.
Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal said she had feared for her life as the mob pounded on the doors of the House chamber.
"I remember think that I may not make it out of there alive. And that we may not have seen our democracy survive," she said.
