Calvin Poon likes making movies about women

17 Feb – Calvin Poon recently admitted that he is more attuned to stories about women due to the nature of the female complexities.

The filmmaker, who sat down for an interview with Mingpao recently, spoke about "Fatal Visit" - his fourth film revolving around women since "Hi, Fidelity", "Season of Love", and "Repeat I Love You", and dismissed the idea that he was more interested in directing love stories due to his own notion of romanticism.

"I just like making movies about women, not because I know them well, but because women are more diverse than men, fuller," he said.

Using the character of Ling (played by Sammi Cheng) in the movie, who harbours a deep secret that she shares with her husband Tang (Tong Dawei), he said, "Ling's core is love, but what happens when the love is too excessive? From a dramatic perspective, a story about women is always rich."

Speaking about Sammi, Poon stated that he is happy that the actress is nominated at the Hong Kong Film Awards' Best Actress category for her performance in the movie.

"I hope that she wins with this film, because she really gave a great performance. There was a scene that could be done by a stand-in, but she decided to do it in person, without even worrying about the possibility of injury. She was really devoted," he said.
